LIFE@Urban Roofs encourages real estate developers and building owners to invest in climate change adaptation measurements by use of the 18,5 km2 flat roofs potential  that is available in Rotterdam.

This new approach will see the local government acting as a stimulator and facilitator. 

The project will trial the use of multifunctional roofs that have greater benefits for property owners than traditional green roofs. These roofs will combine several types of infrastructure: green (to reduce the urban heat island effect and support biodiversity), blue (water storage), yellow (energy generation) and red (social use).

Part of the anniversary edition of Dutch Green Building Week

The DGBW Session is part of the anniversary edition of the Dutch Green Building Week. The tenth edition of the week will take place from September 21 to September 25. #MadeinHolland is the theme of the week, with which the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) and its partners will put the Netherlands on the international map.

Eveline Bronsdijk  Eveline Bronsdijk is advisor for the Roofscape programme for the city of Rotterdam since 2008. The green roofs policy of 2008- 2014 transformed into the multifunctional roofscape policy 2019-2022 to develop 1 km2 of multifunctional roofs in the city in an integrated, resilient and appealing way. The city aims to implement combined solutions for the challenges it faces like climate change and urbanisation. In those twelve years the hesistant attitude of the residents has been transformed into a firm understanding of the value roofs can offer when you add (combined) functions to this unused space. It is both space to add technical solutions and space to add quality of life.  Combine those together and you can result into golden combinations.

Marloes Gout Marloes Gout works as a Sustainability Consultant at the Municipality of Rotterdam. She is part of the Rotterdam Rooftop team and gives stakeholders integral advice on how to create and attain the highest value on their rooftops. At the time of writing, Rotterdam counts 579.000 sqm multifunctional roofs, of which 360.000 sqm are green roofs and 168.000 sqm are 'yellow' roofs: roofs covered with solar panels.  She looks forward to the build of the multifunctional roofs in the LIFE@Urban Roofs project and sees her main task as a civil servant to help see the importance of green. By combining different functions on roofs, unused black spaces are transformed into multifunctional valuable spaces that create a liveable urban environment.

Robert de Kort Robert de Kort is a consultant in urban development at Arcadis and is involved in the LIFE@Urban Roofs program since 2017. He advices the LIFE@urban roofs partners on the financial business case for multifunctional roofs and solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation.   As part of the Arcadis team, Robert supported the LIFE@Urban Roofs program by developing an integral calculation tool that provides insight in the financial business case for multifunctional roofs and more than 20 social values. The tool is publicly accessible and provides decision makers with the arguments to invest in climate proofing real estate.
